Nigerian Govt bans Importation of Indomie Noodles, Gives Reason

The Nigerian government has banned the importation of Indomie noodles into the country.

This was disclosed by the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, in an interview with journalists on Monday, May 1, 2023. Nigerian regulators acted amid an investigation by authorities in Taiwan and Malaysia after ethylene oxide, a cancer-causing substance, was allegedly found in the product.


According to NAFDAC bosses, the compound of interest is ethylene oxide and the director of the Directorate of Food Laboratory Services has stepped in and started working on developing analytical methods. However, she promised to inform Nigerians of the results in time.

The agency announced that the factory will start sampling Indomie noodles, including seasonings, on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Indomie noodle makers Indofod defended the safety of their products, saying that all instant noodles produced by ICBP in Indonesia were processed in accordance with the food safety standards of the Codex Standard for Instant Noodles and the Indonesian National Standards. Drug and Food Control Agency.


The company continuously ensures that all its products comply with applicable food safety regulations and guidelines in Indonesia as well as other countries where ICBP instant noodles are marketed,” Indofood said in part in a press release.
