The Delta State Police Command has arrested four of its officers captured in a viral video counting bundles of cash allegedly extorted from motorists.
Some officers of the Delta Police Command were earlier filmed inside a patrol vehicle, sorting wads of naira believed to have been taken from citizens.
The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, reportedly occurred along a busy road in the state.
In the footage, one officer is seen sitting casually in a police van while sorting through bundles of naira notes in broad daylight.
The video sparked massive outrage among Nigerians, who condemned the police for further eroding public trust through such lawless behaviour.
However, the Command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the officers had been identified and arrested. Four policemen were paraded before the Commissioner of Police.
Among them, two senior officers have been issued formal queries, while two inspectors have been detained and are now facing an orderly room trial.
“The policemen in the embarrassing video have been identified and arrested. They appeared before the CP today. Of the four personnel, two of them, who are senior officers, have been queried, while the two inspectors have been detained and are awaiting an orderly room trial,” the statement read.
Edafe earlier assured Nigerians that the Command would take appropriate disciplinary action against the erring officers.
