The United States Attorney\u2019s Office for Central District of California, Los Angeles, says the September 21, 2022 sentence date for alleged international Internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, aka, Hushpuppi, remains unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The court\u2019s Director of Media Relations, Thom Mrozek, made this known on Friday in response to an email inquiry by Channels Television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since Hushpuppi\u2019s conviction last year for alleged $1.1m fraud, the court has moved his sentence date at least three times. Hushpuppi was initially scheduled for sentencing on February 14 but it was moved to July 11 before it was against postponed for September 21 this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Asked exactly when 39-year-old Hushpuppi would be sentenced by the court, Mrozek said the suspect had long pleaded guilty last year and would be sentenced later this year. \u201cMr. Abbas is currently scheduled to be sentenced by a federal judge in Los Angeles on September 21,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hushpuppi had entered a plea bargain and pleaded guilty to charges including money laundering, wire fraud, amongst others brought against him by the court. According to court documents, he risks \u201c20 years\u2019 imprisonment; a 3-year period of supervised release; a fine of $500,000 or twice the gross gain or gross loss resulting from the offence\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was arrested in Dubai in June 2020 alongside 12 others and extradited to the US for prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kyari\u2019s extradition<\/strong> The court had ordered the FBI to arrest Kyari over a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI am unable to offer any comment on the state of Mr. Kyari,\u201d the court official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n FBI Special Agent, Andrew Innocenti, had alleged that Hushpuppi engaged Kyari\u2019s services after a \u201cco-conspirator,\u201d Chibuzo Vincent, allegedly threatened to expose the alleged $1.1m fraud committed against a Qatari businessman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Innocenti had also claimed he got voice calls and WhatsApp conversations between Kyari and Hushpuppi, alleging that the police officer was paid $20,600 for Vincent\u2019s arrest and detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kyari had taken to Facebook in July 2021 to deny the allegations but he later deleted the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), had during Channels Television\u2019s Politics Today said the United States Government and the Nigerian Government were discussing Kyari\u2019s case and that reasonable grounds for suspicion have been established against Kyari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere are a lot of issues that are ongoing inclusive of the possibility of consideration for extradition. Mrozek was, however, silent on the possible extradition of the suspended Head of Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari, who was indicted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the Hushpuppi\u2019s case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
