[Fact Check]"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 2020, Nigeria was among five countries targeted by a travel ban policy under the US administration of Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the directive, Nigerian immigrants were no longer eligible for visas allowing them to live permanently in the US. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Trump\u2019s presidential re-election in November 2024, a TikTok video claiming that he would issue new visa restrictions for Nigerian professionals was shared tens of thousands of times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, AFP Fact Check found manipulated audio had been added to footage filmed during his second-term victory speech. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was no mention of any visa guidelines during the address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Days after Trump won his second term on November 5, 2024, a TikTok video surfaced claiming he had announced a new policy restricting visa approvals for Nigerian professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump just announced that America will no longer give visas to Nigerians,\u201d reads the caption of the video, which has garnered over two million views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the audio, the move will assist \u201cNigerians to dedicate their skills to the advancement of Nigeria itself\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"555\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/ideemlawful.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/6658183f77f04fbcf20ca85f1f3af9690e1342ba-555x1024.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ideemlawful.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/6658183f77f04fbcf20ca85f1f3af9690e1342ba-555x1024.webp 555w, https:\/\/ideemlawful.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/6658183f77f04fbcf20ca85f1f3af9690e1342ba-163x300.webp 163w, https:\/\/ideemlawful.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/6658183f77f04fbcf20ca85f1f3af9690e1342ba.webp 585w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 555px) 100vw, 555px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshot of the false TikTok post<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am announcing a temporary policy shift, one that aims to encourage Nigerians, especially those in critical professions, to stay, invest, and work in their homeland,\u201d says a voice that sounds like Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs part of this policy, the US will limit certain visa approvals for Nigerian professionals, including doctors, nurses, engineers, and others in essential fields.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The TikTok video was also shared on X, including <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/E5U7-4ZZ5\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-japa-syndrome\">&#8216;<strong>Japa\u2019 Syndrome<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>High poverty rates, a struggling economy, and unemployment have forced thousands of educated Nigerians to flee the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A trend popularly referred to as \u201cJapa\u201d in the local Yoruba language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the UN\u2019s Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the number of international migrants from Nigeria in 2020, the latest year for which figures are available, was 1.7 million, up from 990,000 a decade earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump issued immigration restrictions on citizens of six countries in the same year, including Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, Nigerians constituted the largest group of African immigrants in the US, comprising over 440,000, according to the Migration Policy Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is no evidence of Trump announcing fresh restrictions to date. The audio in the viral TikTok video has been generated using artificial intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ai-generated-audio\"><strong>AI-generated audio<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A close look at the footage shows a mismatch between Trump\u2019s speech and lip movements, a possible clue for manipulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using InVID-WeVerify, the original clip was traced to FOX 5 Washington DC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/q_Q4o0sMBBA\">YouTube channel,<\/a> where it was published on November 6, 2024, after Trump defeated Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris in the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the 4\u201938\u201d mark, we identified the segment in the original clip used in the TikTok post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s head movement, his full body turn to the left, the camera panning to a wide shot of others on stage applauding, and his open arms all match the sequence in the misleading TikTok video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Screenshots showing Trump&#8217;s movements in the original video which match the TikTok video<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his 30-minute speech, Trump did not make any mention of Nigerian visa restrictions but said, \u201cWe are going to fix our borders\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have to seal up those borders\u2026 We want people to come back in\u2026 but they have to come in legally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FULL SPEECH: Trump projected winner of 2024 presidential election\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q_Q4o0sMBBA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 18, 2024, Trump confirmed that he plans to declare a national emergency on border security and use the US military to carry out a mass deportation of undocumented migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immigration was a top issue in the election campaign, and Trump has promised to deport millions and stabilize the border with Mexico after record numbers of migrants crossed illegally during President Joe Biden\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US consulate in Nigeria has been consulted for comment and will update the debunk accordingly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2020, Nigeria was among five countries targeted by a travel ban policy under the US administration of Donald Trump.
