AFCON 2025: Algeria Petitions CAF Over Officiating

—The Algerian Football Federation has confirmed that it has formally lodged complaints with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) over refereeing decisions in its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final match against Nigeria.

The confirmation was announced on Monday through the official X handle of Équipe d’Algérie de football.

The complaints were submitted alongside a request for an investigation aimed at clarifying the disputed decisions and ensuring that appropriate actions are taken in line with existing regulations.I

n its statement, the FAF said it could not ignore the officiating calls during the match, which it claimed generated serious concerns and widespread discontent.

“The Algerian Football Federation cannot overlook the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and caused widespread dissatisfaction, as they undermined the credibility of African refereeing and do not serve the image of African football internationally.“

Accordingly, the Algerian Football Federation has formally contacted CAF and FIFA by submitting an official complaint, accompanied by a request to open an investigation, to clarify what occurred and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable regulations,” the federation said.

The FAF’s petition followed Algeria’s 2-0 defeat to Nigeria on Saturday, which brought the Desert Foxes’ AFCON campaign to an end.Goals from striker Victor Osimhen and forward Akor Adams secured the Super Eagles’ place in the semi-finals.

The encounter reportedly descended into disorder after the final whistle, with Algerian players confronting match officials on the pitch.

Videos circulating online after the game show altercations involving some Algerian players and match officials, as well as an attempted pitch invasion by supporters that was stopped by stadium security personnel.

CAF announced on Monday that it had opened an investigation into alleged misconduct by players and officials during the match.

The football body said it had gathered match officials’ reports and video footage indicating possible unacceptable behaviour and had forwarded the matter to its Disciplinary Board for further consideration.

Meanwhile, the FAF also appealed to supporters to continue backing the national team, describing it as being in a rebuilding phase.It stressed the need to draw lessons from the tournament in preparation for future competitions, including the 2026 World Cup.

The federation reaffirmed its confidence in the players, technical crew, and football administrators, commending their commitment and efforts throughout the tournament.
