Outrage as Hospital Allegedly Forgets Scissors in Patient During Surgery

The family of Aishatu Umar has been plunged into grief following months of intense pain allegedly caused by a pair of scissors said to have been left inside her body after surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center in Kano State.

Aishatu Umar was reported to have passed away around 1am on Monday, after suffering severe abdominal pain for several months following a surgical procedure carried out in September 2025.

The incident was made public by a commentator, Abubakar Mohammed, who shared the account in a Facebook post, identifying the deceased as his sister-in-law.

According to him, Aishatu is survived by her husband and five children.

“She was living in Kano when she became ill a few months ago and underwent surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center in September,” Mohammed said.

Family members explained that complications began shortly after the operation. Aishatu reportedly complained repeatedly of excruciating abdominal pain, leading to several return visits to the same hospital where the surgery was performed.

They alleged that instead of conducting detailed medical checks, hospital staff continued to administer pain medication and discharged her, even as her condition deteriorated.

“She suffered this pain for four months,” Mohammed said.

It was only two days before her death that extensive medical examinations and scans were eventually conducted, a move the family described as long overdue.

“Just two days ago, tests and scans were finally conducted, revealing that a pair of scissors had been left inside her body during the September operation,” Mohammed disclosed.

After the discovery, arrangements were reportedly underway to carry out a corrective surgery to extract the foreign object, but the intervention came too late.

“Efforts were being made to perform a corrective surgery yesterday, but her time had run out, and she passed away.”

The family described the incident as a blatant case of gross professional negligence, questioning how qualified medical personnel could leave a surgical instrument inside a patient after an operation.

“Is this not pure negligence?” Mohammed asked. “Truly, every soul has its appointed time, but how can professional doctors forget scissors inside a patient? ”

He further stated that the incident not only claimed the life of a woman but also damaged the image of healthcare professionals and medical authorities in the state.

The family has called on the Kano State Government and relevant health regulatory agencies to urgently probe the matter and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“We call on the Kano State Government to investigate and take action,” the family said. “We call on the health regulatory bodies to investigate and take action. We demand justice for Aishatu Umar.”

As of the time this report was filed, the management of the Abubakar Imam Urology Center and Kano State health authorities had yet to issue any official statement regarding the allegations.

This development comes days after a similar allegation of medical negligence was made against a hospital, Euracare, by renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie over the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who reportedly died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
