Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike is urging Nigerians to remain calm with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, despite the worsening economic crisis gripping the nation.

Wike made this appeal in Ibadan on Wednesday while leading members of the G-5 and other political allies on a condolence visit to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who recently lost his elder brother, Sunday Makinde, at the age of 65.

The visit, which was meant to be a show of solidarity, took on a political undertone as Wike used the platform to defend Tinubu’s economic policies, despite widespread frustration over rising inflation, fuel price hikes, and the falling value of the naira.

“I have always told people to be patient with this government. This country has faced significant challenges in the past, and it’s essential to recognize the progress we’ve made,” Wike said this while urging Nigerians to remain hopeful despite the growing hardship.

He continued: “Nigerians often forget where we were and the efforts being put in place to improve our situation. We have to give it time. It’s not like a miracle. The policies Mr. President is implementing will have some effects, and people will feel them, but in the end, we will achieve what we want to achieve.”

Wike’s remarks come at a time when Nigerians are increasingly skeptical of government assurances, as economic difficulties continue to mount. Many critics argue that the government has failed to provide immediate relief for struggling citizens, while its policies; such as “removal of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange liberalization” have led to a financial strain on many households.

Accompanying Wike on the visit were former governors like Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Samuel Ortom (Benue), along with Senator Sandy Onor, Philip Aduda, Olaka Nwogu, Mao Ohuabunwa, and Chibudom Nwuche, among others.

While commiserating with the Makinde family, Wike shifted focus to the importance of unity during times of grief. “In this moment of profound loss, we are here to offer our love and solidarity. We stand by our dear brother, Makinde, in this trying time. Losing a loved one is never easy, and we want to assure him that he is not alone,” he said.

However, the visit also underscored the political fractures within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), as another faction of party elders, led by former PDP Board of Trustees chairman Bode George, separately visited Makinde the same day. George was joined by former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and other PDP leaders, highlighting the lingering tensions between Wike’s camp and other factions of the opposition party.

In his response to both delegations, Makinde expressed gratitude for their support and used the opportunity to reflect on the unpredictability of life. He urged his colleagues to prioritize their health, particularly those in public office.
