When Wolves Wear Sheep’s Clothing by Fatimah Hamid

It’s disheartening to see individuals who claim to be spiritual leaders engaging in heinous crimes. The recent case of a cleric dismembered a human being and kept the body in his house for days is incomprehensible and heartbreaking. How cruel has the world become that we can no longer trust anyone? The victim, who trusted the cleric and felt safe with him, met a gruesome end. It’s a stark reminder that even those who present themselves as spiritual guides can hide sinister intentions.

As I reflect on this tragedy, I’m compelled to ask: What has happened to our moral fabric? How can we rebuild trust in a society where violence and cruelty seem to be escalating? These questions linger, demanding introspection and self-reflection. The cleric’s actions are a stark illustration of the darkness that can lurk beneath a facade of piety. As a Muslim, his actions are an egregious betrayal of the fundamental tenets of Islam. The Quran emphasizes the sanctity of human life, and the importance of treating all individuals with kindness, respect, and dignity.

Moreover, Islamic teachings strictly prohibit seclusion between opposite sex – a principle that the cleric callously disregarded, with devastating consequences. His actions have left an indelible scar on the victim’s family, plunging them into an abyss of grief, trauma, and despair. As we grapple with the enormity of this tragedy, we are compelled to confront the darker aspects of human nature and the dangers of unchecked ambition, greed, and lust for power.

In light of this, it’s high time we teach our children about the harsh realities of life. We should guide them on how to cultivate a strong spiritual foundation, praying fervently to God for help and guidance. However, we must also caution them against relying solely on humans or thinking that individuals can single-handedly solve their problems. Rather, we should instill in them the understanding that everyone faces their own struggles and challenges. Therefore, it’s essential to focus on God as their ultimate Savior and source of strength, rather than placing undue reliance on human beings.

Initially, I was skeptical of individuals claiming to have solutions to life’s problems. In my opinion, anyone promising easy answers should be viewed with caution, as they may have ulterior motives. Interestingly, many self-proclaimed problem-solvers are often struggling themselves. Observing the state of the cleric’s living quarters, it’s clear that he was far from stable. If he were truly capable of helping others, wouldn’t his own life be more orderly? This reinforces a fundamental truth: there are no shortcuts to success.

Yeah! It’s glaring many are on social media to connect with like-minded individuals on social media, seeking collaborations and opportunities, it’s essential to remember that success rarely happens overnight. While many of us are willing to put in the effort required to achieve our goals, others may be seeking shortcuts. These individuals often prioritize instant gratification over hard work and dedication. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to identify them, as they may present themselves in a convincing manner.

However, there are warning signs to look out for. Pay attention to how they communicate with you. Are they evasive, secretive, or overly aggressive? If you need to meet in person, choose a public, open space where everyone can feel safe and comfortable. Mind you, it’s always better to err on the side of caution.

As I reflect on the heinous crimes committed by individuals who claim to be spiritual leaders, I’m reminded of the wise words of former President Buhari, “The change begins with me.” Indeed, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to trust others, especially those who present themselves as guides or mentors. We’re constantly plagued by doubts, wondering if we’ll be safe in their presence or if they’ll take advantage of our vulnerability.

The brutal murder of the lady by the cleric is a stark reminder of the darkness that can lurk beneath a facade of piety. However, I firmly believe that the change we seek begins within us. It’s essential to recognize that we all have a role to play in shaping our world. By embracing empathy, kindness, and compassion, we can create a ripple effect that inspires others to do the same.

As we strive for positive change, we must also acknowledge the importance of self-reflection and personal growth. So, as we navigate the complexities of our world, where spiritual leaders can sometimes be wolves in sheep’s clothing, let’s remember that the change we desire starts with us. By being vigilant, discerning, and compassionate, we can collectively create a brighter, more just future.

It’s time for us to take ownership of our actions and work towards building a world where trust can be rebuilt, and faith can be restored. The change begins with me, and it begins with you.

Let’s not forget that we are the architects of our own future.
