Tension in Kano as Bayero, Sanusi plan separate Durbar Celebrations

Tension is on the rise in the ancient city of Kano following a parallel Sallah Durbar festival by the 15th Emir, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, and his 16th counterpart, Khalifa Mohammadu Sanusi II.

The prolonged emirate tussle is taking another dimensional amid a legal battle, as both contenders map out separate lines of events with the alleged full backing of federal and state governments.

In a letter signed by Bayero’s Private Secretary, Abdullahi Haruna Kwaru, and addressed to the Commissioner of Police, the 15th Emir notified the plan of arrangements to conduct the traditional festival at places, including Hauwa Nassarawa and Daushe, to commemorate the end of Ramadan.

According to the schedule, Bayero’s festivities will feature Hawan Sallah, HawanDaushe, and Hawan Nassarawa on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd days of Shawwal 1446 AH, followed by a cultural event on the 4th day.

Incidentally, Bayero’s notice emerged on social media, sooner than the Kano State government directed the four recognised emirates under the leadership of Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, 16th Emir of Kano, to commence full preparation for the Durbar festival.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had given the directive while hosting the first and second-class emirs to special Ramadan Iftar at the Government House.

He insisted that the residents would not be denied the opportunity to relish the colourful traditional activities at the end of Ramadan.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa for comments, were futile.

Meanwhile, the newly posted Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, pledged to ensure the protection of lives and property
