Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, Ijagun, Adewale Ositoye, his counterpart at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Ola Oyedele, and a reliable source within the union leadership at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, on Monday confirmed that the three institutions have joined the ongoing national strike declared by ASUU.
Ositoye said that lecturers at TASUED, in compliance with the national directive, have stayed away from classrooms for the duration of the 14-day warning strike, which began on Monday, October 13.
Pressed further to comment on the situation, the ASUU leader stated that “there is nothing else to say other than to go on the warning strike as agreed by the national ASUU and the reasons for this were specified in the press conference earlier granted by the national body.”
Oyedele of FUNAAB also said that “I can only confirm that my colleagues in the university have joined the national strike and any further enquiries should be directed to the national body of ASUU.”
A top ASUU executive member at OOU, who asked not to be named, told PUNCH Online that the institution had no option but to comply with the directive of the union’s national leadership.
The source said, “This is a national strike, we all know what the problems are, the lecturers in OOU are not different, we are all not happy with the whole situation, and we have joined the national strike.”
Two students of FUNAAB, Benjamin Okoli and Temiloluwa Timothy, who spoke to journalists about the strike, expressed frustration over its impact on the academic calendar.
Okoli said, “Strikes usually come with its attendant consequences for the students, it disrupts the smooth running of the academic session. One might end up spending five years or more for a four-year course.
“The students are not happy and we sincerely hope and pray that ASUU and the government will resolve their differences amicably and allow normal academic work to continue uninterrupted.”
ASUU on Sunday declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria over the Federal Government’s failure to meet its long-standing demands.
The announcement was made by the National President of the Union, Chris Piwuna, at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday at the University of Abuja.
“It goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on the ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th September 2025.
“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, the 13th October, 2025.
“The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” Piwuna said.
