Man disguises as Lecturer to Steal Phones during exam in OAU [Video]

A man who is reported to have disguised as an invigilator has been arrested for stealing phones during an examination in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun state.

According to the report, the man whose identity is yet to be confirmed is an extra-year student who had some spillover courses, as such he was still on campus to write them.

On the fateful day of the incident, he paraded himself as an exam invigilator and entered the exam centres where he started pilfering students’ phones.

The undergraduates allegedly caught him red-handed and shamed him with chants of Ole Ole! (the Yoruba word for thief).

A video that surfaced online showed some students running after him as campus security whisked him away after being arrested.

This comes a month after a final-year student at the school, identified as Okolie Ahize of the Department of Civil Engineering was lynched by a mob.

Ahize was allegedly caught for the theft of a mobile phone at Awolowo Hall of Residence of the institution.

The student was confirmed dead on arrival at the Emergency Medicine Department of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex on Tuesday afternoon after being subjected to a series of torture.

The OAU management has since condemned the lynching

Death of OAU Student: Court Sentences Killer of Adegoke to Death by Hanging

The Osun State High Court has sentenced the killer of Timothy Adegoke, a post graduate student of Oba Awolowo University to death.

The Presiding Chief Judge, Oyebola Ojo had sentenced Dr Rahman Adedoyin who is the owner of Hilton Hotel, Ile-Ife to death by hanging.

Earlier, Justice Ojo declared that Adedoyin, owner of Hilton Hotel, Ile-Ife, where Timothy Adegoke, an OAU postgraduate student was allegedly killed was culpable of murder.

Justice Ojo in her ongoing judgement said the owner of the hotel and two of his workers, based on the circumstances of the case established by the prosecuting counsel, Femi Falana, SAN, are found culpable of conspiracy to commit murder, and unlawful killing of the deceased.

Adegoke’s Death: Court Reserves Judgment in Adedoyin, Others’ Trial

A state high court sitting at Osun State has reserved its judgement in the murder case of Timothy Adegoke who is a Master’s student of the Obafemi Awolowo University.

The master student who died in a controversial circumstances at Hilton Hotel, Ile-Ife in November 2021.

Recall that Adegoke after reportedly arrived at the Hilton hotel on November 5, was found dead the following day, on November 6, 2021 in his room, leading to the arrest of the hotel owner, Dr. Ramon Adedoyin, and six workers of the hotel.

Adedoyin and the six workers – Magdalene Chiefuna, Adeniyi Aderogba, Oluwole Lawrence, Oyetunde Kazeem, Adebayo Kunle, Adedeji Adesola – were arraigned on 18 counts bordering on murder, conspiracy and felony by the state.

They all pleaded not guilty to all the charges

At the resumed hearing of the matter on Thursday, the prosecution and the defence adopted their final written addresses and canvassed concluding arguments.

In his submission, Adedoyin’s lawyer, Mr Yusuf Alli (SAN), argued that there was no link between his client and Adegoke’s death, beyond being the owner of the hotel where the death occurred.

Alli, who insisted that there was no vicarious liability in law, argued that the charges against his client and other defendants were based on suspicion and asked the court to discharge and acquit them.

Similarly, counsel for the workers, Muritala Abdulrosheed (SAN), Dr Rowland Otaru, (SAN), and Mr Okon Ita, all asked the court to dismiss the charges and set their clients free, contending that there were no compelling facts linking them to the crime.

Abdulrosheed said some of the defendants did not even have any contact with the late Adegoke, saying the murder charges could not be sustained.

But the prosecutor, Mr Femi Falana, urged the court to uphold the charges against the defendants.

Falana recalled that Adegoke’s corpse was dumped in the bush in an effort to hide the crime from the authorities by those involved.

Falana insisted that based on the evidence led before the court, the defendants should be pronounced guilty as charged.

Earlier, the defence had addressed the court on the eligibility of Falana to prosecute the case, insisting that he had no fiat from the Attorney General of Osun State.

Alli and other defence counsel said an application challenging Falana’s locus in the matter had been filed.

They asked the court to set aside Falana’s appearance in the trial and erase it from its records.

But Falana, who urged the judge to disregard the claims by the defence counsel, recalled that he was introduced by a legal team from Osun State Ministry of Justice, as the prosecutor of the matter before the commencement of trial.

After taking arguments from the lawyers, Justice Ojo said judgment would be delivered at a date within the next one month to be communicated to the lawyers

OAU Dentistry Faculty Listed In Global Universities Ranking

Prof. Morenike Toyin Ukpong, Dean, Dentistry Faculty, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has attributed the latest ranking of the institution’s Dentistry Faculty by the Global Academic Ranking of World Universities (GRAS) to the high-quality collaborative research outputs from the faculty.

The report for the 2022 GRAS ranking released recently also featured other Nigerian universities such as the Veterinary Sciences of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, emerged 201- 300 groups while in Psychology, University of Nigeria, Nsukka emerged in the 401-500 groups.

An elated Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Prof. Ukpong, joined other colleagues in celebration.

She said, “I think collectively we know that the Faculty is strong and we can do much more together. Most importantly, we want to do a lot more. The major driver of this noble achievement is the high-quality collaborative research outputs from the Faculty.”

Besides, Ukpong revealed that Biomaterial Science Research is ongoing in the faculty to facilitate changes in Dental Biomaterial Research in the country, adding, “We are one of the few centres in the country building competency on research conduct and dissemination. We are looking forward to NUC approval of our Dental Implantology Master programme”.

However, the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Higher Education Observatory for Africa (HEOFA), Prof. Peter Okebukola, has congratulated the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, as well as authorities of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) and the entire university community in general.

In the same vein, a member of the Board of Higher Education Observatory for Africa (HEOFA), Dr. Fred Mansah, a Ghanaian, attributed the feat attained by Nigeria universities in the GAS ranking as the dividend of the NUC-led efforts on Nigeria universities culminating in the academic ranking of the world universities, saying it is worthy of jubilation.

Within the OAU fold, Prof. Foluso Owotade, ex-dean Faculty of Dentistry, said the news was quite encouraging and that the feat was a combination of academic excellence

ASUU Strike: OAU Lecturer Turns Musician, Releases Debut Single [Video]

The OAU student community, on the night of Friday 5th August 2022, was thrown into a frenzy of excitement and pun following the release of a mysterious link on the WhatsApp platform.

This link, when followed by OAU Kilonshele, led to a YouTube video with a 5-minute recording of a song believed to have emanated from the camp of a lecturer of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Investigations were made and it was discovered that the lecturer known as Dr. T. Olatoberu is an active academic staff from the Department of Soil Science and Land Resources Management. Further findings by OAU Kilonshele were made to make this fact credible as the image and details of the YouTube account handle were traced to the university staff portal and a correlation with the details provided was discovered.

As the ongoing ASUU strike enters its 6th month on a ‘No work’ ‘No pay’ condition set by the Federal Government, it is sad yet hilarious to see something of such emanate from an active lecturer victimized by the ‘unbothered’ attitude of the FG.

We hereby call on the Federal Government to resolve this issue as soon as possible so striking academic staff can get back to work and prioritize the education of their students.

It is not every time we see a lecturer turn into a musician amid a crisis. Before things fall apart further and different scenarios start originating, we tender a plea to the FG to do the right thing
