Retired Generals React as Tinubu Reshuffles Nigeria’s Service Chiefs

ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful October 25, 2025

President Tinubu’s recent overhaul of Nigeria’s security leadership on Friday has stirred reactions from citizens and retired military generals across the country.

The President dismissed General Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff and appointed Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as his replacement. Other key appointments include Major General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, while Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye remains Chief of Defence Intelligence.

This development follows a report by Sahara Reporters about an alleged coup attempt against President Tinubu’s administration. The report claimed that those behind the plot, now in custody, planned to assassinate the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

Speaking to the Vanguard Newspaper, several retired Generals described Tinubu’s action as “a welcome step” that would rejuvenate the armed forces and restore professional growth. Others believe it will introduce fresh strategies to tackle insecurity nationwide.

One of the Generals said, “It is nothing unexpected! It’s a routine change of service chiefs, having completed their two years tenure. As usual though, people will read meanings to the announcement. I expected this change to happen by November or December this year. It is not written that service chiefs must serve for two years but it is a tradition across all services, to allow for the young officers to move up in order to prevent stagnation and forced retirements.”

“This is routine. It means that we are back to the ideal order of doing things. Normally, Service Chiefs are appointed for a term of two years. They have served two years and in order for the services to have a steady progression without a high attrition, the two years cycle should be sustained.”

“If you recall, in the past, the service chiefs stayed over five years which was a terrible misnomer which unfortunately dislocated the chain of succession in the military leading among others, to early retirement of many highly trained and qualified senior officers who would have served in those positions.. It denied many officers of possible elevation as service chiefs. This unfortunately, resulted in some political maneuvers then”, he added.

Retired General Anthony Atolagbe, in a television interview, said, “there will be excitement in the military because of this change.”

Atolagbe further argued that, “it was the practice for service chiefs to serve for two years until past administrations started extending it. This change will make for career progression and this is remarkable by this administration”.

A serving senior military officer who requested anonymity said, “If the political class genuinely supports the military and wants this crisis to end, it will end. Once the military is given clear direction and freedom to act, there are different ways to deal with these criminal elements.”

In 2023, President Tinubu dismissed all service chiefs and appointed Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as National Security Adviser; Maj. Gen. C.G Musa, Chief of Defence Staff; Maj. Gen. T.A Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral E.A Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff; AVM H.B Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff; DIG Kayode Egbetokun, Acting Inspector-General of Police; and Maj. Gen. E.P.A. Undiendeye as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

Following the death of Major-General T.A Lagbaja on October 5, 2024, President Tinubu appointed General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Army Staff a month later.

What kind of impact do you think these changes will have on national security? Let us know your thoughts in the comment below.

Full List as Tinubu Sacks Military Command, Appoints New Defence and Service Chiefs

President Bola Tinubu has announced changes in the hierarchy of the Service Chiefs.

This is “in furtherance of the efforts of the Federal Government of Nigeria to strengthen the national security architecture,” according to a statement released Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare.

The statement, titled “Tinubu Changes Service Chiefs,” confirmed that General Olufemi Oluyede has been appointed to replace General Christopher Musa as the new Chief of Defence Staff.

“The new Chief of Army Staff is Major-General W. Shaibu. Air Vice Marshall S.K. Aneke is Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas is the new Chief of Naval Staff. Chief of Defence Intelligence Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position.

“The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expresses most profound appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the other Service Chiefs for their patriotic service and dedicated leadership,” the statement added.

Tinubu urged the newly appointed Service Chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them by further enhancing professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship within the Armed Forces.

All appointments take immediate effect.

Meanwhile, this platform had earlier reported in June 19, 2023 that President Tinubu approved the immediate retirement of all Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Comptroller-General of Customs.

At that time, the President stated that the move was part of efforts to restructure Nigeria’s security leadership and strengthen the national defence system.

The 2023 reshuffle came amid persistent security challenges, including insurgency in the Northeast, banditry in the Northwest, and secessionist unrest in parts of the Southeast.

Additionally, ideemlawful reported on October 19 that reports of an alleged plot by some military officers to overthrow President Tinubu’s administration sparked outrage among Nigerians, prompting warnings from senior lawyers, civil society groups, and retired generals against any anti-democratic actions.

In response, the Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, issued a statement on Saturday denying a report by Sahara Reporters linking the detention of 16 military officers to a failed coup plot.

This online newspaper had connected the alleged coup to the Federal Government’s decision to cancel Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebration.

Dismissing the report, Gusau said it was “intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among the populace,” explaining that the October 1 parade cancellation was “purely administrative.”

He added that the decision allowed the President to attend a bilateral meeting abroad and ensured that troops could sustain ongoing operations against insurgency and banditry.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has now appointed General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa.

This was confirmed in another statement by Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, on Friday.

According to the statement, Musa was replaced by Oluyede, who previously served as Chief of Army Staff.

Major-General W. Shaibu was named the new Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshall S.K. Aneke became Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas was appointed Chief of Naval Staff.

However, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retained his position.

“President Bola Tinubu has made changes in the hierarchy of the Service Chiefs in furtherance of the efforts of the Federal Government of Nigeria to strengthen the national security architecture.

“The President appointed General Olufemi Oluyede to replace General Christopher Musa as the new Chief of Defence Staff. The new Chief of Army Staff is Major-General W. Shaibu. Air Vice Marshall S.K. Aneke is Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas is the new Chief of Naval Staff. Chief of Defence Intelligence Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position.

“The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expresses most profound appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the other Service Chiefs for their patriotic service and dedicated leadership.

“The President charges the newly appointed Service Chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them to further enhance the professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship that define the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”

This marks President Tinubu’s second major security leadership reshuffle since taking office in May 2023.

Back in June 2023, he replaced the Chief of Defence Staff, all Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Comptroller-General of Customs.

Those appointed at the time included Nuhu Ribadu as National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. C.G. Musa as Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. T.A. Lagbaja as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral E.A. Ogalla as Chief of Naval Staff, AVM H.B. Abubakar as Chief of Air Staff, DIG Kayode Egbetokun as Acting Inspector-General of Police, and Maj. Gen. E.P.A. Undiandeye as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

Chief Defence Staff, Irabor Orders 50 Generals To Resign From Army, Air Force, Navy

ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful December 14, 2021
ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Leo Irabor has ordered 50 Generals in the Nigerian military to tender their resignation with immediate effect.

They cut across the Air Force, Army and Navy; around 25 of the senior officers are in the Army.

An impeccable source told an online news platform that Irabor gave the directive at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

At a 2 pm meeting, the CDS thanked them for their service and told all present that it was high time they left office.

But the Course 36 Generals still have more than three years before their retirement.

“They are about 50; 2 of them in the Army will retire in 2022, while the rest have about 3 and half years left in service”, the source revealed.

Another source wondered why the Armed Forces are eager to ease out scores of capable and experienced hands at a time the country is battling insecurity.

Ironically, Irabor recently intervened in the 2016 forceful retirement of 38 Army officers via a letter (Ref. No. CDS/8/A) to Defence Minister, Bashir Magashi, a retired Major General.

They were asked to go in June 2016, an action described as arbitrary by those affected, security personnel, experts and Nigerians.

To date, the military and the federal government are yet to comply with extant court judgments ordering the officers’ reabsorption.

In January 2020, Justice Rukiya Hasstrup at National Industrial Court in Abuja faulted the Army decision and directed their reinstatement.

In May 2020, Justice Edith Agbakoba approved that contempt of court charge is filed against military chiefs for failing to comply with a valid order.

Controversy As Comedian “Cute Abiola” Spends 14 Days In Navy Detention

According to reports, Cute Abiola has been placed on one-month ‘extra duty’ for wearing police uniform in one of his skits and for ridiculing the Nigeria Police Force. “Cute Abiola has been placed on one-month extra duty after he was tried. He will be in charge of cleanship; supervising painting, electricians, carpentry, cutting of grasses, and others. He will be supervising civilians.

“He is no longer under detention. He has been released to move around to serve his punishment. Because he was detained on November 15, that one month will start counting from then, which means he is going to be engaged till December 15. By then, he will be off the extra duty,” Navy authorities said on Saturday.

Naval spokesperson, Commodore Suleman Dahun, confirmed his release on Friday.

Cute Abiola was declared missing on Monday, November 15, 2021, when fellow comedian Debo Adedayo aka Mr Macaroni, raised the alarm he couldn’t be found after reporting at his office in Navy Town, Lagos.

The Nigerian Navy has released popular Instagram Comedian, Abdulgafar Ahmad better known as ‘Cute Abiola’ from detention.

The Navy later announced he wasn’t missing but was detained for contravening the military laws by posting a video of himself in military uniform on social media, an act which is said to be in violation of the armed forces’ social media policy.
