Court Remands Hotel Staff For Stealing Guest’s T-Shirt

A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Thursday remanded a 21-year-old hotel worker, Ismail Idris, who pleaded guilty to stealing from a guest and his employer.

Chief Magistrate M. I. Dan-Oni ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending his sentence.

Dan-Oni adjourned the case until Jan. 14, for the review of facts of the case and sentencing.

Idris, who resides at No. 5, Abata Close, Orile Iganmu, Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Dec. 30, at Rita Lori Hotel, Surulere, Lagos.

Ekhueorohan said that the defendant stole a T-shirt belonging to a guest, Miss Jennifer Okon, from her room.

He said that the defendant also stole 15 fridge compressors valued at N375, 000 from the hotel.

Ekhueorohan said that the offence contravaned Sections 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years imprisonment for stealing.

Magistrate Orders Arrest Of Ex-Judge For Allegedly Beating Bailiff At Residence

A Chief Magistrate Court in Adamawa State has ordered the Commissioner of Police to arrest a former High Court Judge, Hon. Justice Micheal Goji.

Chief Magistrate Abdullahi Digil ordered the arrest of the ex-judge for allegedly beating a court bailiff, Amos Ndari, who went to his residence in the Federal Housing Estate Girei, near Yola, to serve him with a court summons.

Justice Goji was alleged to have confronted the court bailiff and molested him, tearing his clothes.

The bailiff was earlier directed by the magistrate court to serve the former judge with summons following a complaint lodged before it by the State Board of Internal Revenue.

In its complaint, the revenue board had alleged that the judge assaulted an Officer-In-Charge of Girei Tax Office on the 5th November 2021.

The board said its officer and his team were at the residence of Justice Michael to collect personal income tax meant for the state when he was dealt with by the judge.

The beating of the bailiff occurred on Wednesday, the Yola Magistrate court learnt, when the bailiff turned up at the retired judge’s house to serve him with the summons as directed by the court.

It was gathered on Thursday that as soon as Ndari greeted the ex-judge and introduced himself as a bailiff who came to serve him with a court summons, the judge became angry, grabbed the bailiff, and attempted to hit him.

Ndari reportedly took to his heels and tried to go from the judge who raised the alarm, and ordered his security guard to prevent the bailiff from getting out of the house.

In response, the security guard blocked the gate and prevented the bailiff from going out.Justice Goji allegedly then walked up to the bailiff and started punching him until a certain man intervened and rescued the bailiff.

Chief Magistrate Digil ordered the State Police Command to deploy its men to arrest the former high court judge with immediate effect

Google Wins UK Legal Case Over iPhone Tracking

Britain’s highest court on Wednesday blocked a $4-billion class action against Google that had accused the company of illegally tracking millions of iPhone users.

The Supreme Court said in a statement that its five judges “unanimously dismisses” the legal action brought by campaigners against the US-based tech giant on behalf of 4.4 million people in England and Wales.

The “Google You Owe Us” association had sought compensation of £3 billion ($4 billion, 3.5 billion euros) after accusing the group of secretly tracking iPhone users’ internet activity.

A UK court had already dismissed the case in October 2018 but the judgement was overturned by the Court of Appeal, allowing the latest hearing to take place.

Judge George Leggatt, delivering the Supreme Court ruling, declared the intention to seek damages without proving financial loss or mental distress, was “unsustainable”.

The association had accused Google of circumventing iPhone security options and collecting personal data between August 2011 and February 2012 using the smartphone’s Safari browser.

It claimed Google “illegally misused the data of millions of iPhone users” via the “clandestine tracking and collation” of information about internet usage on iPhones.

Google had yet to respond to its legal victory thanks to the Supreme Court concluding that the “unlawful processing” of data had not been proven.

“Google You Owe Us” described the verdict as a “bitter blow” to UK consumers.

“We are bitterly disappointed that the Supreme Court has failed to do enough to protect the public from Google and other big tech firms who break the law,” added lead claimant Richard Lloyd in a statement.
