•’Wike still under investigation

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have been under severe internal attacks as many people have observed because they not only disagreed with the party leadership on who should be their presidential candidate ahead of the February 25 elections yet there was allegations from different that they also worked against the party.

They operated under the aegis of Integrity Group but the governors among them were popularly referred to as G5.
The crux of the whole matter was their insistence on the removal of the PDP Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, who hails from the North just like the party’s presidential candidate.

Led by Governor Nyesom Wike (Rivers State) who had contested for the party’s presidential ticket with Atiku but came second, they had canvassed that the ceding of the party’s chair should be zoned to the South as a form of geopolitical balancing.

But their demand was never met which further set the stage for a stalemate ahead of the polls.

The opposition parties won the February 25 presidential election in the states that are controlled by the G5 governors namely Wike (Rivers), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Samuel Ortom (Benue) and even Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).

Thus it wasn’t unexpected that the PDP leadership would give a fight back after the elections and Atiku not only lost but the party also lost some states they had controlled on.

‘No blanket decision’

The PDP National Working Committee, NWC, had, on Thursday, suspended former Senate President, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, former Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayo Fayose, his former Katsina State counterpart, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema and two chieftains of the party, Prof. Dennis Ityavyar (Benue State), Dr Aslam Aliyu (Zamfara State) over alleged anti-party activities.

Of the lot, at least Fayose had been linked to the G5 governors. The NWC also referred Ortom to the party’s National Disciplinary Committee.

However, the decision to spare Makinde, Ugwuanyi, Ikpeazu and Wike alleged to have also engaged in anti-party activities has set tongues wagging.

The NWC had said they treated each case on an individual basis.

A member of the party’s NWC, who was privy to what transpired during the meeting when the decision was taken to suspend Fayose and co was taken, explained that it “was not a blanket decision.”

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the issue, said, “We treated each case on its merit.”

He went on: “It was as simple as looking at the level of infraction committed by each of those whose cases were brought before us.
“His Excellency Governor, Seyi Makinde, and his Enugu State counterpart, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, for example, were not overtly hostile to the party in spite of the differences we had.

“These two party members contributed men and materials to support our presidential campaigns, especially in their respective states.
“They also didn’t openly canvass for support for presidential candidates other than Atiku Abubakar unlike Ortom who openly declared his support for Peter Obi and to add salt to injury also asked his supporters to vote for Obi.

“Even when there were speculations that Makinde and Ugwuanyi were supporting the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, they were diplomatic and subtle in their approach.

“We are a party governed by rules and regulations. For every action there are consequences.

“As for Governor Wike, his case is still being investigated; although he disparaged our presidential candidate, he was careful not to openly canvass for the candidate of another party

PDP G-5 Governors Divided Over Tinubu, Obi’s Adoption

The five aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) identified as the G-5 are yet to agree on the presidential candidate to support in 2023.

Recall that the governors threatened not to support the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar following the stand of the National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu to remain in office.

The governors had called for Ayu’s resignation over northern dominance in key positions in the party.

Members of the G-5 include, Nyesom Wike (Rivers State), Samuel Ortom (Benue State), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu State), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia State) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo State).

Naija News learnt that the governors could not agree on the presidential candidate to support during their meeting in London, the United Kingdom during the week.

There are indications that members of the group would support either the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, or the flagbearer of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.

Sources that spoke with Punch on the outcome of the meeting said the aggrieved governors had yet to agree on who to support, due to their respective ambitions and interests.

While Makinde is seeking a second term in office, Ortom, Ugwuanyu and Ikpeazu are contesting for the Senate.

Sources disclosed that the governors after their meeting decided not to openly campaign for their preferred candidate so as not to jeopardise their chances in the election.

One of the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said the governors were sharply divided over the candidates.

The source said, “Many people know that former President Olusegun Obasanjo sold the candidacy of Peter Obi to them. He wants the governors to back the former Anambra State governor. Some initially embraced the former President’s suggestion out of respect for him.

“However, it was clear that Obi might not win the election, so the reality of this dawned on the governors and they discussed it, but they did not take a position.

“You also know that the presidential candidate of the APC sent emissaries to the governors before he personally met them. He had negotiated with them, especially Wike. But the other governors are afraid that such a negotiation could work against them in their states.

“The APC and its presidential candidate are not very popular in the South-East. In fact, the people of the zone are angry with some comments said to have been made by the vice-presidential candidate of the APC (Kashim Shettima) some time ago. This was why the people walked out on him in Imo State when members of the party went there for consultation.”

Another source speaking on the outcome of the meeting said, “The South-East generally is for the PDP, though the Labour Party through Obi is making inroads into the place. Given the fear of the people and their personal ambitions, they are likely going to back Atiku and the PDP.

“Also, there is no governor who will not want to have a successor. They will not want to confuse their supporters with conflicting directives and therefore commit political suicide.”

The source added that the positions of Ortom and Makinde were almost similar.

The source noted, “For example, in Benue, the governor has never hidden his anger against the APC. Remember the party refused to give him a second-term ticket, but the PDP accommodated him. He had fought with almost all the power brokers in the opposition.

“His preferred candidate is also not popular, unlike the APC candidate. If he confuses the voters, he and his candidate will lose in the election.

“Makinde has many enemies within the PDP. The likes of Bisi Olopoeyan and Mulikat Akande-Adeola and their supporters are still angry with the way the governor treated them during the last primaries and others. Yet, his enemies are increasing.

“Don’t forget, the APC governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Teslim Folarin, and that of the Accord Party, Bayo Adelabu, are waiting for Makinde to make a mistake so that they can take advantage of it. They are even talking about forming a coalition against Makinde, so it’s clear that the governors have to survive first.”

The governor following the visit was notified through a letter with reference number, VP/SP/DOP/26, dated 10th February, 2022, informing him of the visit of the Vice President.

Unfortunately as he was at the gate of the Makurdi Airforce base, Saturday morning to receive the vice president, he was denied entry into the place by the security men, who claimed they were not informed about the governor’s visit to the base to receive the vice president.

Speaking, governor Ortom described the action as unacceptable, breach of protocol and politics taken too far. “It is unfortunate that an ugly incident occurred today, which is a breach of protocol and I feel so sad for our country Nigeria, where everything has been reduced to politics. There are certain things you don’t politicise.

“I was to attend the burial ceremony of one of our elders and leader, Prof Ignitius Ayua; I’d made all arrangements to travel to Konshisha Local Government Area (LGA), then this letter was brought to me, that the Vice-President is going to be in transit, through Makurdi to Wukari

“I decided to mandate the Deputy Governor to represent me at the burial of Prof. Ayua. So, this morning, I got prepared and went to the Airforce base, where the Vice President is supposed to land, enroute Wukari and unfortunately, I was bounced at the gate; in my own state.

“It doesn’t happen. This is a breach of protocol and this is not accepted. This is politics taken too far. This is not correct and somebody must account for this
