Ouattara Re-Elected as Ivory Coast President for Fourth Term in Disputed Election

Ivory Coast’s President, Alassane Ouattara, has secured a fourth term in office, winning a decisive 89.77 percent of the vote in an election that excluded his two major rivals, the electoral commission announced on Monday.

Nearly nine million Ivorians were eligible to vote on Saturday in the world’s leading cocoa-producing nation, which has largely avoided the coups and extremist attacks affecting much of West Africa.

However, tensions rose sharply before the election, with outbreaks of deadly violence reported.

Even before the provisional results were released, Ouattara was widely predicted to win overwhelmingly after early tallies on Sunday showed him capturing over 90 percent of the vote.

Turnout was nearly 100 percent in his northern support bases.

The long-serving leader also gained an advantage in traditionally opposition-dominated regions in the south and parts of the economic capital, Abidjan, where polling stations saw sparse activity on election day.

Entrepreneur Jean-Louis Billon finished second with 3.09 percent of the vote, according to commission president Ibrahime Kuibiert Coulibaly, who reported a 50.10 percent voter turnout — roughly the same as in 2020 when Ouattara won 94 percent in a boycott-marred election.

This time, Ouattara’s chief challengers — former president Laurent Gbagbo and ex-Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam — were barred from running, Gbagbo due to a criminal conviction and Thiam for holding French nationality.

“Their absence, their calls not to participate in the election, and the climate of tension that deteriorated in recent days foretold a significant demobilisation of the electorate,” said William Assanvo, a researcher at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS).

In the southern city of Gagnoa, a Gbagbo stronghold, Ouattara garnered 92 percent of votes but with turnout as low as 20 percent.

The opposition has rejected Ouattara’s victory, denying it “any legitimacy” and calling for a fresh election.

‘A Calm Election’
Political analyst Geoffroy Kouao observed that “the turnout rate shows two things.”

“First, Mr. Ouattara’s supporters turned out in force, as shown by the Soviet-esque results in certain regions,” Kouao said.
“And second, supporters of Gbagbo and Thiam’s parties did not go to the polls.”

Billon also raised concerns on Sunday about “very low turnout in some regions,” while still extending congratulations to Ouattara.

Billon and other candidates on the ballot — including former first lady Simone Ehivet Gbagbo — had little prospect of forcing a runoff due to weak backing from major political parties and limited campaign funding.

Earlier opposition calls for demonstrations triggered violent clashes in the run-up to the poll, leaving at least eight people dead and nearly two dozen injured in election-day disturbances at about 200 polling centers.

Authorities imposed a nighttime curfew in several regions and deployed 44,000 security personnel nationwide.

Presidential elections in Ivory Coast are often marked by unrest. Ouattara first assumed power after the 2010–2011 post-election conflict with Laurent Gbagbo, which resulted in over 3,000 deaths among rival supporters.

By Monday, Abidjan had largely returned to normal, after the capital was unusually quiet over the weekend.

“The Ivorians said NO to prophets of doom,” proclaimed Patriote, a pro-Ouattara newspaper, celebrating “a calm election.”

The opposition daily Notre Voie, however, described it as “an election reflecting a divided country.”

Paul Biya re-elected as Cameroon’s President for Eighth Term

Cameroon’s 92-year-old President, Paul Biya, has been declared the winner of the country’s presidential election, securing his eighth term in office.

The Constitutional Council announced the results on Monday, confirming that Biya obtained 53.66% of the total votes, defeating Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who received 35.19%.

“Hereby proclaimed President-elect: the candidate Biya Paul,” declared Clement Atangana, President of the Constitutional Council.

The election, held on October 12, 2025, further extends Biya’s more than four-decade rule, which began when he first assumed office in 1982.

With this new seven-year mandate, Biya could remain in power until 2032, by which time he will be nearing 100 years of age.

However, the election was overshadowed by allegations of vote manipulation from the opposition, accusations that Biya’s party has firmly rejected.

Tchiroma, the main opposition contender, earlier claimed victory, stating that he had secured 54.8% of the votes and urging citizens to resist any “falsified results.”

Tensions escalated ahead of the official declaration, as clashes erupted between demonstrators and security forces, leaving at least four people dead and over 100 arrested in Douala, Cameroon’s commercial hub.

The Cheyenne model plane crashed onto one of its wings and exploded into a massive fireball. Shocked onlookers near the runway could be heard screaming as the aircraft showed signs of distress.

According to DailyMail, the aircraft was departing from Paramillo Airport in Táchira when it went down at the Paramillo Airfield inside San Cristóbal National Park.

Woman Accidentally Burns Apartment While Killing Cockroach with Spray

South Korean police have reported that a woman in her 20s accidentally set her apartment ablaze while attempting to kill a cockroach using an improvised flamethrower.

According to local media, the woman tried to burn the insect with a lighter and a flammable spray, saying she had used the same method before. However, some items in her apartment caught fire on Monday, and the flames quickly spread throughout the building.

Police in the northern city of Osan stated they plan to request an arrest warrant for the woman, who may face charges of accidental arson and causing death by negligence.

The BBC reported that one of the woman’s neighbours, a Chinese national in her 30s, died while trying to escape the blaze. The victim lived on the fifth floor of the building with her husband and their two-month-old baby.

When the fire broke out, the couple opened their window and called for help. They passed their baby to a neighbour in an adjacent block before attempting to escape. The husband managed to climb over, but the woman tragically fell. She was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead hours later.

Police said the couple likely tried to escape through the window because thick smoke had blocked the stairway. The building contained commercial shops on the first floor and 32 residential units from the second to fifth floors.

Authorities confirmed that eight other residents suffered smoke inhalation.

According to The Guardian, the use of blowtorches or makeshift flamethrowers to kill cockroaches has become a social media trend. In 2018, an Australian man similarly set his kitchen on fire while attempting to eliminate cockroaches using the same method.

Nigeria Deports 192 Over Cybercrime, Ponzi Scams

ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful

The Nigerian government has begun deporting 42 Chinese and Philippine nationals convicted of cyber terrorism and Ponzi scheme offences.

According to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the process kicked off today, Sunday, August 17, 2025.

The first batch of deportees, drawn from 192 convicts, was scheduled to leave Nigeria on Sunday afternoon.

They were part of 759 suspects arrested during a sweeping raid on December 10, 2024, at Oyin Jolayemi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

NIS confirmed that more batches of convicts will be flown out on Monday and Tuesday to conclude the repatriation exercise.

All convicted individuals have been handed over to Immigration officials for immediate deportation to their countries of origin.

Investigations revealed that the syndicate was running a massive cyber fraud and Ponzi network before being dismantled in a coordinated sting operation.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which prosecuted the cases, secured convictions of 192 foreigners—mainly Chinese and Philippine nationals—linked to the fraudulent scheme.

The charges included impersonating victims online, training staff of Genting International Co. Limited in fraudulent tactics, and other offences under the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006.

According to the EFCC, the crimes posed serious threats to Nigeria’s financial system and national security.

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, hailed the convictions and deportations as a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s battle against cybercrime and financial scams.

He reaffirmed the Commission’s determination to expand investigations, recover stolen assets, and safeguard the country’s integrity in line with President Bola Tinubu’s anti-corruption agenda.

The December raid, regarded as one of Nigeria’s largest anti-cybercrime operations, signaled a decisive step in the fight against cross-border financial fraud.

Imam stabbed During Morning Prayer in Ramadan (Video)

ideemlawful profile1iDeemlawful

An imam was stabbed while leading his congregation in prayer on Sunday at a mosque in Paterson, N.J. The assailant was quickly subdued by worshippers, according to local authorities.

The ugly incident took place inside Omar Mosque in south Paterson around 5:37 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Upon arrival of the police, they found that a 32-year-old man was already apprehended, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes said in a press release.

The suspect, identified as Serif Zorba, has been arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder and possession of unlawful weapons.

Imam Sayed Elnakib, 65, was quickly transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center.

Mayor André Sayegh, who went to visit Elnakib at the hospital on Sunday afternoon, said the imam was in stable condition despite “suffering some serious wounds.”

At a press conference on Sunday, Sayegh said there will be a heightened police presence at mosques throughout the city to ensure people’s safety in the remaining days of Ramadan.

“You should not be afraid to pray, you should feel safe to pray,” Sayegh added.

Over 200 people were at the mosque at the time of the attack.

The Prosecutor’s Office however did not provide details about the possible motive for the assault but told NPR that the investigation is ongoing.

“While it is unclear what motivated the attacker, there is no justification for violence of any kind, especially in a sacred space,” Council member Al Abdel-aziz, who represents the area where the incident occurred, wrote on Facebook.

The attack comes weeks into Ramadan, a month of fasting and prayer that represents the most sacred time of the year in the Islamic tradition.

The incident also took place a day after the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations called for a hate crime investigation into a separate incident at the Dr. Hani Awadallah public school in Paterson.

Dina Sayedahmed, a spokesperson for the chapter, told NPR that the group learned on Friday that the word “Allah” in Dr. Hani Awadallah’s name was defaced with an unknown dark substance. The word “Allah” refers to “God” in Arabic.

The group said it recorded 152 complaints related to anti-Muslim prejudices in 2022.

Paterson is home to one of the highest Muslim populations in the U.S. by percentage, with estimates of Muslims making up about 25,000 to 30,000 of the city’s more than 150,000 people.
