The Department of State Services on Sunday strongly flawed viral reports alleging that former Zamfara governor and serving Senator Abdulaziz Yari was arrested because he refused to take President Bola Tinubu’s phone call.

The Spokesman of DSS, Dr Peter Afunanya, in a statement issued on Sunday.

The statement posted on the Twitter handle of the DSS described the claim as laughable and inconsequential.

While confirming that Yari was invited by DSS, Afunanya in the statement said the senator knew the reason behind his invitation.

He also denied accusations that the Service was snooping on Judges on the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

Afunanya also denied reports that Service stormed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and Code of Conduct Bureau and carted away certain files from them.

He debunked reports that there is a rumble in the DSS due to nepotism.

He said the Service ordinarily would not have responded to the inaccuracies but for the “fickle-minded and vulnerable persons as well as the unsuspecting public” that may take the lies for facts.

Afunanya in the statement, said, “The attention of the Department of State Services has been drawn to false reports by sections of the online media particularly SaharaReporters, Peoples Gazette, and Jackson Ude.Related News

“The so-called news platforms variously and wrongly fed the public with misleading narratives and accusations against the Service.

“For instance, SaharaReporters wrote that the Service stormed the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) and carted away certain files from them.

“Jackson Ude falsely claimed that there is a rumble in the DSS due to nepotism. He further accused the Service was snooping on Judges on the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

“On its part, Peoples Gazette reported that Senator Abdulaziz Yari was arrested for alleged refusal to pick up the President’s phone call (whatever that meant).

“There are other variants of unsubstantiated and anonymous petitions flying around against the DGSS, his family, and some officials.

“To set the record straight, the DSS did not execute operations at the ICPC and CCB or remove files from their offices.

“Instructively, the two agencies have, on their own, refuted the news in widely circulated press statements. It is petty, if not laughable, to report that Yari was invited for refusing to pick up the President’s call. This is the height of junk journalism. Yari knows why he was invited.

“In fact, the Service denies all the allegations as they lack any factual basis or credibility. They are only figments of the creators’ imaginations.

“This is more so that the publishers in question have been noted in and outside the country for their notoriety for peddling fake news, sensational and gutter journalism. Without a modicum of proper and civilised behaviour, they indulge in character assassinations and sundry blackmail as a business,” the statement added.

DSS Releases Former Zamfara Governor From Detention, ‘Main Reasons For Arrest Revealed’ – Sources

The Former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, is reported to have regained his freedom following detention by Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS) over reelection fund.

In an emerging report by the SaharaReporters, it was learnt on Sunday morning that Yari regained his freedom on Saturday night.

This platform earlier report Abdulaziz Yari was arrested and detained by the department of state services, DSS, over existing rancour of the 10th senate Presidency candidature.

Our source had exclusively reported that the DSS detained the former governor and serving senator, Yari, over N45 billion reelection fund released under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Authoritative sources told our sources that Yari was implicated by the detained governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, who alleged that the former governor received N45 billion from the CBN to fund Buhari’s reelection in 2019.

Emefiele has been detained by the DSS since the second week of June after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu’s government which is investigating him for “corruption-related issues and abuse of office.”

Our source had reported how Emefiele also named the suspended head of the anti-corruption agency Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, as an alleged accomplice in the Naira redesign scam which rocked the country months ago.

During the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, Yari had remained “adamant” despite the zoning of the Senate Presidency to the South-South the ruling All Progressives Congress and contested against Godswill Akpabio – the current Senate President who is also Tinubu’s stooge.

Yari was the favoured candidate of the Buhari cabal to clinch the Senate Presidency but he lost to Akpabio who got 63 votes.

Our source learnt on Saturday that both Emefiele and Bawa implicated Yari, and the DSS had to come after him.

“DSS agents have been tracking him (Yari) since returning from London for medical care soon as he lost the Senate Presidency. The detained EFCC Chair Bawa also implicated Yari in a detailed manner regarding how Yari was doing deals with Emefiele. Emefiele in turn accused Bawa of working for Yari,” one of the sources had said.

Sources said that the former governor was betrayed by the “leadership of some opposition parties.”

Our source earlier reported how details emerged on how Yari together with the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Ahmed Idris pilfered about N8 billion and $2.2 billion from nine oil-rich states.

On how Idris, Yari and others illegally shared N84.7 billion, an EFCC official had said, “We found out that there was an agitation by nine oil-producing states on the depletion of the excess crude account without the payment of their 13 per cent derivation fund.

“This agitation was tabled before the post-mortem sub-committee of the Federal Account Allocation Committee, FAAC. It was further revealed that the post-mortem sub-committee came up with a figure of about $2.2 billion as what was due to these nine states.

“This amount was to be deducted over a 16 months period, on a quarterly basis. 11.5 per cent of this figure, which is equivalent to N84.7 billion, was put aside for the payment of some public officials to facilitate this payment.

“Even after the determination of this amount by the post-mortem sub-committee, the service of Olusegun Akindele and Co. Ltd, a company belonging to the 2nd defendant, was procured under the guise of consultancy.

“N84.7 billion, which is 11.5 per cent, was paid to Akindele Olusegun and Co. through First Bank Plc. The sum of N84.39 billion equivalent to 9.84 per cent less bank charges, was what was shared among the various parties.

“We wrote a letter to First Bank Plc to get the statement of account of the company. From the statement of account, we found out that the first payment was on February 12, 2021. There was an accumulative payment of over N21 billion.

“Before the payment was made, the balance on the account was N451, 631 and the source of the payment was from FAAC’s Escrow account. Investigation revealed that this account was under the control of the 1st defendant (Idris) and the 3rd defendant (Usman) who was the director of the federation account in the office of the AGF.

“Aside from this payment on February 12, 2021, my lord, similar payment of the same amount of over N21 billion were made on May 6, July 28 and November 5, 2021, bringing it to a total of about N84.39 billion.”

DSS Arrests Former Governor Over Refusal to Pick President Tinubu’s Telephone Call

The Department of State Services (DSS) has been reported to have arrested and detained former Zamfara governor Abdul’aziz Yari due to his refusal to respond to telephone calls from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a exclusive report by Peoples Gazette, Yari, who is an incumbent senator representing Zamfara West senatorial district is said to have spent two nights in custody following his arrest on Thursday, July 6, 2023.

A source, an official, who spoke on the development on condition of anonymity said the DSS detained him for “thinking the president is a joke,”

The source said; “He was asked why he ignored the president’s phone calls during the Senate leadership battle.”

“He started arguing that he has every right to contest for the position and decisions about his political career moves should not come from the president.”

“The president was trying to appeal to him to stand down his ambition to make sure any fate similar to how Bukola Saraki became Senate President in 2015 won’t be repeated,”

“We all knew that Saraki’s emergence back then was the first error President Buhari made, and it crippled his first four years in office,” the official said.

Sources said Yari received a call from Yusuf Bichi, the director-general, to report at the SSS’ headquarters for an urgent discussion. Upon arrival, Yari was asked to wait for Bichi, who purportedly stepped out.

But the senator was delayed throughout the day by a phalanx of armed SSS agents, only to be told at about 10:00 p.m. Thursday that he won’t be going home. The senator’s planned visit with other Senate colleagues to former President Ibrahim Babangida on Friday was consequently aborted.

“His phones were confiscated, and he may be spending days, if not weeks, in custody,” the source added.

A spokesman for the SSS sidestepped questions about the development on Friday.

Recall that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had designated the South-South region as the rightful holder of the Senate President position in the 10th Assembly, with Senator Godswill Akpabio being their preferred candidate. Additionally, Senator Jubrin Barau from the North West was selected as the favoured candidate for the deputy Senate President position.

However, this designation faced resistance from several lawmakers, with Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari being one of the prominent figures opposing the decision.

Eventually, Yari failed to garner enough votes for the position, but his Senate associates have alleged irregularities and may challenge the outcome in court.

This could set him on a collision course with the president, with officials warning of dire consequences for Yari’s political future should he proceed with the lawsuit
