President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has denied increasing school fees and insisted that federal universities remain tuition-free across Nigeria.

Funding Challenges in Public Institutions Lead to Fee Hike

Many institutions recently increased their fees by 100 to 200 percent, including most federal and state universities, to cushion the effects of funding challenges in public institutions.

Tuition-Free Federal Universities Remain Intact

Reacting to the reports, President Tinubu clarified that the federal government has not increased tuition fees in federal universities. He emphasized that tuition fees for federal schools remain free for all students.

Discretionary Charges for Sundry Services

The recent fee increments announced by some universities are for discretionary charges related to hostel accommodation, registration, laboratory, and other sundry services.

Efforts to Support Indigent Students

President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian has access to quality tertiary education.

In addition to the Students’ Loans Scheme, which was signed into law last month, the government will implement work-study, merit-based scholarships, and grants to support indigent students.

Stakeholders’ Concerns and Relief Measures

The recent fee hikes have raised concerns among parents and students, with many describing them as an additional economic burden.

However, the government plans to implement various mechanisms to support diligent students, ensuring they complete their education regardless of their parents’ financial situation.
