The Archbishop of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend Isaac Ayo Olawuyi, is advocating for a Muslim governor in Lagos State in the coming 2027 governorship election. He stated that it’s time for a Muslim to lead the state, given that Christians have held the position for 12 years.

Olawuyi while speaking at the 22nd annual thanksgiving service of the Lagos State House of Assembly said, by 2027, Christians would have occupied the number one seat in the state for 12 years.

The clergyman’s remark was disclosed in a statement issued by Eromosele Ebhomele, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

According to the statement, the Archbishop of Methodist Church noted that there should be a religious tolerance among the people.

He said 2027 is a time for the people of Lagos to elect a Muslim governor for the state.

Since Nigeria’s transition to democracy in 1999, Lagos State has had four governors. Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola, both Muslims, served two four-year terms each between 1999 and 2015. They were followed by Akinwunmi Ambode and the current governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

In 2015, Akinwunmi Ambode assumed office, completed his tenure in 2019 before handing over to Sanwo-Olu. Both Ambode and Sanwo-Olu were Christians.

The clergyman is advocating for a Muslim to take office in Lagos by 2027, when the current governor, Sanwo-Olu will be completing his two four-year terms.

Olawuyi further added that, “I also want to add that we should have consideration for religious inclination in Lagos State. It would be 12 years in 2027 that we have been in the system together and we have been having Christians as governors.” he concluded.
