Female NYSC member ‘beaten’ by School teachers ‘for not greeting properly’ in Kwara

A secondary school teacher in Kwara State has been demoted after being found guilty of physically assaulting a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.

The female teacher, identified as Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike was demoted by two-grade for the decision of the investigative panel.

In addition, the panel recommend the female teacher for a counseling session.

Female Corps member posted to Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin was physically assaulted for not greeting the staff properly.

The incident which has sparked reactions from different quarters, demanding probe into the physical assault of the corps member.

The panel found the staff guilty fighting on duty, use of foul language, insubordination, and disrespect for the national identity which the uniform of the corp members represent.

The panel decision was contained in a statement on Wednesday, jointly issued by the Commissioner of Education and the the Kwara state teaching services.

Statement reads: “The Kwara State Government has sanctioned the school teacher accused of maltreating a youth corps member posted to Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin.

“the Commissioner of Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, and the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, Mallam Bello Tauheed Abubakar, the government said the investigative panel set up on the matter found Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike guilty of fighting on duty, use of foul language, insubordination, and disrespect for the national identity which the uniform of the corp members represent.

“Her behavior contravenes public service rules, and she has therefore been demoted by two-grade levels, according to the statement.

“The teacher is also to be transferred out of her current school as well as undergo counseling sessions, the statement said.

“The State Government will not tolerate such abuse under any guise. The government deeply regrets the action of the teacher and reassures the management of the National Youth Service Corps that the development did not represent the people of the state, and it will not happen again,” the statement added.

It urged teachers in the state to remain law abiding at all times by performing their duties in accordance with the laid-down procedure as the state government will continue to prioritise training on teaching ethics and procedures of service.
