Former President Goodluck Jonathan has arrived in Abuja after being evacuated from Guinea-Bissau following a fresh military coup that erupted in the country.
Jonathan touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Thursday evening, a day after troops announced an unconstitutional takeover while election observer teams were still operating.
He had travelled to Guinea-Bissau as head of the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission to monitor last Sunday’s presidential and legislative elections.
Jonathan arrived in the country to oversee the polls as tensions mounted over disputed results before the military eventually intervened.
Reacting to the coup, Jonathan, speaking alongside continental and regional observer leaders, condemned the takeover, calling it a deliberate attempt to undermine the electoral process.
In a unified position, the trio — including Filipe Nyusi of the African Union Election Observation Mission and Issifu Kamara of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission — denounced the coup.
They reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the country “during this sensitive period,” stressing that national harmony, heritage, and lives must take precedence over individual or political ambitions.
The Nigerian government also condemned the coup in strong terms, warning that military disruptions to civilian governance undermine democratic values and regional security.
The government described the takeover as “a serious threat to democracy and regional stability,” urging African nations and global partners to coordinate security responses to avoid further deterioration.
