Famous Niger Delta leader Asari Dokubo has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to refrain from releasing Nnamdi Kanu, the head of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on the grounds that doing so would amount to encouraging criminal activity.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has had custody of Kanu since his 2021 re-arrest and he is currently on trial for terrorism. He had been granted bail in 2017 by the Federal High Court of Abuja, but he disregarded the terms of the bail and left the country.

With the inauguration of a new administration, new calls for Kanu’s release have been made after President Muhammadu Buhari resisted pressure to do so.

During his meeting with President Bola Tinubu, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah brought up the Kanu matter.

Speaking with reporters, however, after meeting President Tinubu on Friday, June 16, 2023. Kalu should be brought to justice, according to Dokubo.

“Nnamdi Kanu was free during EndSars; his release would promote impunity. What did he do? He sprayed gasoline on EndSars’ flames. He has now been discovered. This is criminal; what about the people who have died. He needs to go to court.

“Releasing Nnamdi Kanu is rewarding crime and the horrifying killing of innocent people. For the deeds and incitements he committed, he ought to answer to the law, the man said.

Dokubo had previously charged that cabals and the military were responsible for 99 percent of the Niger Delta’s oil theft.

However, he pledged to fight it and put an end to it and stated his willingness to use his band of devoted supporters, known as “his boys,” to take the necessary steps to put an end to these evil activities.
