A UK court in its judgement on Friday has sent a former deputy president of the Nigerian senate, Ike Ekweremadu to ten years Imprisonment.
The Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, UKWhile delivering the judgement, the court also sentenced his wife to six years in prison.
Meanwhile the third accused person in the suit, Obinna Obeta, was also sentenced to ten years and six months Imprisonment.
Obeta, who is a medical doctor, has also deprived of his license to further practice as a medical practitioner in the UK.
The jury had found that the Ekweremadu and others had criminally conspired to transport a 21-year-old street trader from Lagos to London in order to take advantage of his kidney for their daughter, Sonia, in March 2023.
The young man allegedly pretended to be Sonia’s cousin in an unsuccessful attempt to get doctors to perform a $80,000 private operation at the Royal Free Hospital.
The Judgement has become the first of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act 2015 of the UK.
