Recently, rape has been one of the most discussed topics in Nigeria due to the sudden increase in rape activities and any form of sexual assaults.
So many information on how to prevent rape, where to be,what not to wear, what time you could go out,if you are free to work alone and the likes. Its not anyone’s prayer but God forbid the unfortunate happens? What next? How would you go about it?
I will be sharing some helpful tips on what to do next?
Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual peneteration carried out against a person without that person’s consent (Wikipedia) and this act should be totally condemned.
Rape victims suffer physical, emotional and sexual violations. The shock could be paralyzing and totally draining after being assaulted. But not knowing the right steps to take could be a bigger scar.
You need to get a safe place and find someone you trust (This can be really hard if violated by a trusted person)
Do not make any moves on washing up or getting new clothes on because you feel dirty. This very normal. Why do I say this? You will need this evidence (such as semen, blood, saliva and hair) if you are filing a police report.
Go to the nearest hospital within five days. Drugs would also be administered to prevent unwanted pregnancies(P.S this is not an abortion) and also examine you for any Sexually Transmitted Infections, injuries etc.
You could take a sexual assault exam or get a rape kit in not more than 96hrs to gather DNA and materials from your body, clothes and belongings.
Love yourself. Again. You need you to heal.
SUPPORTS:
Whenever it feels right or less unnerving to ; You can consider the following:
- A police report.Legal support
- Mental health support
- Counselling
- Community outreach services.
As clear headed individuals, do not pressurize, victimize, stigmatize or ridicule rape victims. It is never their faults And as victims, you should know that being abused is not the end of life or once abused does not automatically means a continuous chain of abuse. I pray you heal with inner peace.
