There was pandemonium on Wednesday at the Cross Rivers State House of Assembly shortly after the Speaker, Elvert Ekom Ayambem, was impeached.

Ayambem was asked to step down by 17 members of the house over allegations of misappropriation of funds.

The impeachment was made due to the motion which was moved by Hon. Effiom Ekarika representing Calabar South 1 Constituency and seconded by Hon. Omang Charles Omang representing Bekwarra State Constituency.

Rt Hon Elvert Ayambem was elected Speaker of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly in June 2023.

The House turned chaotic as the sitting rounded up, with members fighting over the mace.

In a now-viral video, Effiom Ekarika was captured on camera physically assaulting another member of the house who tried to take the mace after a motion for impeachment was made.

Ekarika was seen in the video hitting the other member with his elbow and the house went into chaotic mode after that.

Those lawmakers that supported the impeachment were seen singing the national anthem and jubilating.

Meanwhile, fierce looking officials of the Department of the State Services (DSS) the Dragon Squad and personnel of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), have taken over the Cross River State Assembly complex.

They barricaded every access to the complex in a bid to restore sanity at the complex
