A Magistrate Court sitting in Kano State, Northern part of Nigeria had order a man identified as Malam Yusuf, to kill his cockerel on or before Friday over cause of noise pollution.
The Chief Magistrate, Halima Wali had issued the order on Tuesday after neighbour of the owner had sued to complain the constant crowing of the cockerel which has deprives him of sleep.
The owner, Shuaibu while admitting in his defence said “It is true that my cock often disturbs my neighbours with a loud cry,”
He further told the court that his intention is to slaughter the cock for the celebration of good Friday and pleaded for permission to do so.
The court granted his request but held that the domestic bird is a nuisance to the neighbourhood and therefore asked Yusuf to ensure he kills the cockerel on or before Friday as ordered or faces a penalty from the court.
Meanwhile, keeping livestock and poultry in homes across Nigeria where they are reared for food and for commercial purposes is constitutional. However, there is need to obtain license by the possessor as contained under the Wild Animals (Captive Animals) Regulations (1975).
