A junior secondary student has sued the Ekiti State government seeking N15 million in damages over alleged breach of fundamental rights after she was suspended over disciplinary matters.

Gift Agenoisa, who is a JSS1 student of Mary Immaculate Secondary School, Ado-Ekiti, was suspended for alleged indiscipline and assault on a teacher by her parents.
In a suit number HAD/01/CR/2021 and sworn to at the Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti on her behalf by her mother, Mrs. Odunayo Agenoisa, she claimed that her suspension from school by government after her parents allegedly beat up some teachers for punishing her for indecent dressing and gross indiscipline, infringed on her rights.

The plaintiff described as cruel and inhuman the alleged treatment meted to her for coming to school with the so-called indecent hairstyle.
Joined in the suit are: The School Principal, Mrs Oluwasanmi F.M (1st respondent); the Commissioner for Education, Dr Olabimpe Aderiye (2nd); the Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission (3rd); and the Ekiti State Government (4th respondent).
The student claimed she was on May 22 given 20 lashes at the school assembly resulting in bruises, life-threatening scars, bloodstained uniform and fainting.
The student was suspended after her father, a police sergeant, Elijah Agenoisa, on May 22 allegedly mobilized four armed policemen to manhandle some teachers in the school for scolding his daughter who was accused of coming to school with an indecent hairdo against the school rules and regulation.

Meanwhile, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye has adjourned the case to September 22 for hearing.
