iDeemlawfulThe Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Humaid as the new Grand Mufti and Head of the Senior Council of Scholars.
The appointment was made by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman, and confirmed by Inside the Harmain on its Facebook page on September 24, 2025.
Humaid succeeds Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh, who died on Tuesday after serving as the kingdom’s top cleric for over 25 years. He was in his 80s.
Born in 1949, Sheikh Humaid is one of the nine Imams of the Grand Mosque in Mecca. He has been a member of the Saudi Assembly since 1993 and held the position of Speaker of the Majlis al Shura from February 2002 to February 2009.
He also briefly served as the President of Religious Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques between 2001 and 2002.
Known for his widely quoted sayings, Humaid led the annual Eid prayers for many years until 2025, when Abdul-Rahman Al-Sudais replaced him.
