The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has rejected a report by BBC News Pidgin.

The report regarding arrest of popular social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkBlackMan, calling it “fake news.”

On Monday, the EFCC posted a screenshot of the BBC report on its verified Instagram account, with the words “FAKE NEWS” prominently stamped across it.

The report had quoted EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, who allegedly stated that Otse was arrested in response to multiple petitions from individuals, and that the matter would soon be taken to court.

The report further claimed that Otse was arrested in Abuja shortly after visiting a bank with his mother.

“We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners,” the report had quoted Oyewale as saying.

However, the EFCC’s Instagram post has left many questions unanswered, as the commission has not released an official statement clarifying the reasons for Otse’s arrest or addressing the circulating media reports.

The post, which has quickly garnered over 1,200 likes and sparked hundreds of comments, has prompted many Nigerians to seek more transparency and clarity from the anti-graft agency.

Despite the EFCC’s rejection of the BBC report, the public remains in the dark about the circumstances surrounding Otse’s detention
