Seven drowns in Lagos within a Week

A total number of seven persons drowned in the swimming pools of three hotels and on an Island in Lagos State this week.

Details obtained from the police revealed that the cases of drowning occurred between April 8 and 12.

Around 7:30pm on April 10 two young boys were said to have drowned at a Guest house in Mushin, one in a hotel’s pool on the Island and another one at a hotel located in Shasha area of the state.

While one victim drowned at Ibeshe Island, two others fell in the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge after their overspeeding bus was involved in a fatal accident.

It was gathered that one of the victims, Fawad Adeyemi, 16, drowned on April 10 while swimming at a hotel’s pool at Marina, Lagos Island.

He was said to have drowned around 4pm, and was rescued from the pool and rushed to the general hospital where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

The Lagos State police public relations officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed all the death

Hundeyin said while one of the victims died in a hotel in Mushin, another one was said to have drowned in a similar circumstance in another hotel in Lagos Island.

Hundeyin, who appealed to fun seekers to be more safety-conscious when out on a swimming expenditure, said a good number of them died because the management of the hotels did not have in-house safety officers around their swimming pools.

“Two were said to have drowned in one hotel in Mushin while another one died in a hotel on the Island. Two others fell off 3MB in an accident and another died in a hotel in the Shasha area of the state,” he added.

The Lagos State police spokesman said the bodies of the seven persons had since been deposited in hospital morgues.

Hundeyin further said investigation was still ongoing and that any hotel management found culpable would be made to face the wrath of the law.
