The Law students’ Society, University of Ilorin has hosted Annual Personality Lecture to honor professor Abdulrazzaq Abdulmajeed Alaro MNI.
The event being a long tradition of the faculty of Law has been held in honor of numerous distinguished personality. This year’s making the 6TH is marked to celebrate an islamic law scholar of international repute, professor Abdulrazzaq Abdulmajeed Alaro MNI
The 28th president of the Faculty of Law of university of Ilorin, SAHEED, Afeez Ayinde has described the Honoree as a scholar of unparallel international repute and a personality whose influence extends far beyond the realms of academia.
He stated further in his speech “As we gather to explore the theme, “Revisiting Islamic Legal Education in Nigeria,” we stand in awe of Professor Alaro’s multifaceted brilliance, his versatile understanding of Islamic law, and his adeptness at navigating the nuances of legal scholarship.”
“His gentle demeanor and unwavering commitment to academic rigor have endeared him to colleagues and students alike, earning him a place of reverence in the annals of legal academia.”
“Professor Alaro’s profound insights into Islamic jurisprudence serve as a guiding light for scholars and practitioners around the world, illuminating the path toward a deeper understanding of the intersection between law, religion, and society.”
Pioneer Annual Personality Lecture was in “2017/2018 Academic Session, in honour of Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, who is the Current Vice- Chancellor University of Ilorin, Second Annual Personality Lecture was in honour of Prof. J.O Olatoke SAN, the third in honour of Prof. Muhammad Mustapha Akanbi of the blessed memory, fourth was in honour of Prof. Nimarh Modupeola Abdulraheem who is the Current Dean of the Faculty, the Last was in honour of Prof. Bashir Adeniyi Omipidan, and the Current in honour of Prof. Abdulmajeed Abdulrazaq Alaro mni. All above listed personalities are known for their top notch Academia impactfulness”.
Professor Abdul-Quadir Zubair (The First Professor of Islamic Law in West Africa) was recognized at the program who doubled as the Father of the Day. The Chairman of the Day in person of Hon. Justice Mahmud AbdulAb
The guest speaker of the event Professor A.A oba Lecture focused on Historical Development of Islamic Legal Education in Nigeria.
He talks on the challenges of judicial training as they are inherent problems with Islamic phenomenon in the Western world due to a language problem as translation is highly problematic and the idea of law differs in these two systems.
He added other
” challenges include internal crises of People, consensus among Islamic stakeholders the combined law program is not satisfactory”.He states that he prefers the syllabus of Islamic studies to that of combined law as it is more traditional than it and that there is need for a more closer relationship between the departments of Islamic studies and combined law.There is a need for review for the combined law program in the University.
The guest lecturer in his speech also highlighted the need for the judge to be adequately trained so as not to misuse Shariah rulings and also disagree with the rulings of piako case .
He further explained that Shariah is a distinct and divine field of Law, that requires adequate training for its application, he said;
“There Should be standard Islamic Legal Education in Nigeria
Establishment of professional body for Islamic Law such as Council of Islamic Education, Islamic Legal Education should be responsive with the aide of adequate personnel, Encouragement of annotated translation of classical islamic text by LLM and PHD Students of Law”.
The guest speaker ended his lecture with a rhetorical question which goes thus “How do we Professionalise Islamic Legal Education in Nigeria?”and also urge Muslim ummah to find answer to it”.
The Honouree delivered his Appreciation Speech, he left with the quote of Isaac Newton which says “If I have seen further than others, not because I am taller than them, but I have stood on the Shoulders of Giant”.
Prof. Abdul-Quadir Zubair made the Goodwill message, he appreciated the Law Students Society for finding Prof. Abdulmajeed Abdulrazaq Alaro mni worthy of the Honour, and a programme well planned. The event ended with the recitation of the School Anthem.
