A leaked memo addressed to the Lagos State Ministry of Health has stirred public outrage, revealing that the Lagos State Government approved a sum of N61,285,000 for the mass burial of 103 individuals identified as victims of the 2020 ENDSARS protests.

Lekki Tollgate protest

The leaked document, dated July 19, 2023, has caused uproar on social media, with citizens expressing concern and demanding answers from the government.

The Controversial Memo

The five-paragraph leaked memo outlines the steps for the processing of funds following the governor’s approval.

A Ministerial Tenders’ Board Meeting reportedly reviewed the recommendations of the Procurement Planning Committee and subsequently raised no objections to awarding the mass burial contract to a funeral service provider.

The memo also specifies that the approved company must remit relevant taxes and deductions.

Uncertainty Surrounding ENDSARS Casualties

The memo’s revelations have reignited controversy surrounding the number of casualties recorded during the 2020 ENDSARS protest.

In response to the uncertainties, the Lagos State Government established an inquest led by Justice Doris Okuwobi to investigate the incidents related to the protests.

Since the events of 2020, both the Lagos and Federal Governments have consistently denied any mass killings during the ENDSARS demonstrations.

Public Outcry and Government Silence

The leak comes over two years after the nationwide protest that saw thousands of Nigerians take to the streets to demand an end to police brutality and call for comprehensive reforms, particularly regarding the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The protests garnered international attention and culminated in the contentious shooting of demonstrators at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos, a prominent rallying point for the protesters.

Despite the gravity of the leaked memo, the Lagos State Government has yet to issue an official response or comment on the matter, leaving the public with growing concerns and questions.

The Reactions

The leaked memo has thrust the issue of ENDSARS casualties back into the spotlight, sparking public outcry and demanding accountability from the Lagos State Government.

As citizens await an official statement, the revelations raise questions about transparency, accountability, and justice in the aftermath of the protests.

The government’s response and actions in the wake of this revelation will undoubtedly shape public perceptions and expectations going forward.
